filmtank entwickelt und produziert Kinodokumentarfilme sowie Dokumentarfilme, Dokumentationen, dokumentarische Serien und Reportagen für das deutsche und internationale Fernsehen. Außerdem rückt die Entwicklung und Produktion multimedialer Stoffe zunehmend in den Fokus.
Thomas Tielsch und Wüste Film (u.a. „Gegen die Wand“ von Fatih Akin) gründeten filmtank 2001. Um die Präsenz in Baden-Württemberg zu stärken, wurde drei Jahre später filmtank stuttgart ins Leben gerufen. 2007 kam die Programmreform GbR von Michael Grotenhoff und Saskia Kress hinzu. Seitdem ist filmtank auch in Berlin vertreten.
In den letzten zehn Jahren haben diverse filmtank Produktionen zahlreiche Nominierungen und Auszeichnungen erhalten. So ist zuletzt der Dokumentarfilm Die Frau mit den 5 Elefanten 2011 für den Adolf-Grimme-Preis und den Deutschen Dokumentarfilmpreis nominiert worden. Der Film erhielt bereits 2010 eine Nominierung beim Deutschen Filmpreis in der Kategorie "Bester Dokumentarfilm 2010".
2009 war filmtank bereits zwei Mal für den Adolf-Grimme-Preis nominiert. Zum einen mit der deutschen TV-Version von Das Moskitoproblem und andere Geschichten (Regie: Andrey Paounov) und zum anderen mit Andreas Pichlers Der Pfad des Kriegers.
2004 gewann der Film Call Me Babylon von Andreas Pichler den Adolf-Grimme-Preis. Second Hand - Mitumba von Raffaele Brunetti erhielt den italienischen Globo d'Oro 2005 für den besten Dokumentarfilm. Zahlreiche filmtank Produktionen laufen auf internationalen Festivals, so die Koproduktion Das Moskitoproblem und andere Geschichten in Cannes 2007 .
Die thematischen Schwerpunkte der filmtank Produktionen liegen in den Bereichen aktueller gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen, kultureller Phänomene, Technik und Wissenschaft. Historische Stoffe werden vor allem unter dem Aspekt ihrer Relevanz für die Gegenwart betrachtet.
filmtank entwickelt verstärkt auch medienübergreifende Formate. Das sich momentan in Produktion befindende Crossmedia-Projekt "Kampf um die Weltherrschaft" besteht aus einer zweiteiligen Dokumentation und einem thematisch verknüpften Online-Spiel. Zusätzlich erhält filmtank durch die Teilnahme an der Documentary Campus Masterschool 2011 mit dem Crossmedia-Projekt "Cyberattack 2.0 - What if..." die Möglichkeit den transmedialen Ansatz gezielt zu verfolgen und neue, spannende Projekte zu verwirklichen.

The company was founded in February 2001, as a joint venture between Wüste Film (i.a. Head-On by Fatih Akin) and Thomas Tielsch. To strengthen the presence in Baden-Württemberg, filmtank stuttgart was founded three years later.
In 2007 filmtank berlin was established as a fusion with former Programmreform GbR of Saskia Kress and Michael Grotenhoff.

filmtank received numerous nominations and awards for its films. One of the most successful productions of the recent years is The Woman with the 5 Elephants by Vadim Jendreyko. It received nominations i.a. in 2011 for the German Documentary Film Award and Adolf Grimme Award and in 2010 for the German Film Award (Best Documentary Film 2010).
In 2009 filmtank has already been nominated twice for the Adolf-Grimme-Award. The TV-version of The Mosquito-Problem and Other Stories and Andreas Pichler’s The Way of a Warrior received nominations. Raffaele Brunetti’s film Second Hand - Mitumba obtained the Italian Globo d’Oro for Best Documentary Film in 2005. And Call me Babylon by Andreas Pichler was awarded with the Adolf-Grimme-Award in 2004.
Numerous films are shown at international festivals, such as The Woman with the 5 Elephants, which had its world premiere at the Visions Du Réel in Nyon and the co-production The Mosquito-Problem and Other Stories by Andrey Paounov, which was a big success in Cannes 2007.
Emphasis in terms of subject-matter is placed on current social developments, cultural phenomena and history, whereby historical subjects are regarded primarily with a view to their relevance to the present day.
Moreover, the transmedial approach becomes more and more crucial for filmtank. The latest project we are currently producing Conquest of the World, a two-part documentary combined with an online game, is paradigmatically for this kind of comprehensive strategy. filmtank’s participation in the Documentary Campus Masterschool 2011 with its cross-media production Cyberattack 2.0 - What if...? also provides access to these advanced and forward-looking fields in media and enables filmtank to expedite its transmedial projects.
